Ever Wonder What “Organic” Really Means for Your Clothes? Let’s Talk GOTS!

At Club Nye Beach, we’re all about bringing you sustainable and conscious coastal apparel. But what does “sustainable” truly mean when it comes to textiles? One of the most important certifications we look for, and one you might have seen on some of your favorite items, is the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

So, what exactly is GOTS, and why is it such a big deal?

Imagine a watchdog for organic textiles – that’s essentially what GOTS is! It’s a worldwide standard that makes sure clothing and other textile products are made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibers (like organic cotton or wool) in a way that’s good for both people and the planet.

GOTS covers the entire journey of a textile product, from start to finish:

  • Processing: This means how the raw fibers are turned into usable materials. GOTS ensures that harmful chemicals aren’t used in this stage.
  • Manufacturing: This covers the actual making of the fabric and the clothes. Factories must meet strict environmental and social standards.
  • Packaging: Even the way products are packaged is considered, encouraging the use of eco-friendly materials.
  • Labeling: GOTS has clear rules for how products are labeled, so you know exactly what you’re getting.
  • Trading and Distribution: The standard even extends to how products are bought, sold, and moved around the world.

What kind of products does GOTS apply to?

You’ll find the GOTS certification on a wide range of textile items, including:

  • Fiber products (like raw cotton or wool)
  • Yarns
  • Fabrics
  • All sorts of clothes (think organic cotton t-shirts, dresses, and baby clothes!)
  • Home textiles (like organic bedding and towels)

What GOTS doesn’t cover:

It’s important to note that while GOTS is comprehensive for textiles, it does not set criteria for leather products. Leather comes from animals, and its processing has different environmental and ethical considerations.

Why is GOTS important to us (and to you!) at Club Nye Beach?

When you see the GOTS label on an item, it’s a strong assurance that:

  • The materials are truly organic: This means they’ve been grown without harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, which is better for the environment and the farmers.
  • It’s made responsibly: GOTS ensures fair labor practices, safe working conditions, and limits the use of toxic chemicals throughout the production process.
  • It’s transparent: The entire supply chain is audited, meaning there’s accountability from the farm to the final product.

Choosing GOTS-certified products means you’re supporting a system that prioritizes environmental protection, social responsibility, and transparent practices. It’s one more way we can all make a conscious choice for better apparel – and a better planet. Look for the GOTS label next time you’re shopping for sustainable style at Club Nye Beach!
